Your posting about Mr. Hopper’s death has been very helpful. My grandmother worked with his family for about 35 years. When she passed away in 2002 at the Hoppers’ residence, Mr. and Mrs. Hopper arranged all the concerns up to the point of bringing her remains to us her family here in the Philippines. It’s so unfortunate that we won’t be able to meet with him anymore and thank him personally for the kindness he and his family extended.
It’s nice to know that he is treasured by many people. God bless to his bereaved family.

Dear colleagues,
It is with great sadness that I bring you the news of the untimely passing of Gobind Nankani on Friday. During his thirty plus years at the Bank, Gobind touched the professional lives of many of us in the PREM network and beyond. Even before he became the Vice President for PREM in 2001, he was the Country Director for Brazil and several other countries in LAC and Chief Economist for the South Asia Region. And before he retired from the Bank, he served as the Vice President for the Africa Region.
In all these positions, Gobind was exemplary in his intellectual rigor, his deep commitment to development and the World Bank, and his focus on the needs of the clients, whether middle-income countries in LAC or low-income countries in AFR. And he combined these qualities with humility, decency and integrity. As can be seen from his rich professional life after leaving the Bank — as the Chair of the Economic Advisory Council to the President of Ghana, the President of the Global Development Network and Executive Director of the International Growth Center — he still had much to offer the cause of international development, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Our prayers and thoughts are with Helen, his daughters and the rest of his family at this difficult time.
I also want to pass on details of the memorial service for Gobind. It will be held on Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at 1 PM at:
Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home, L.L.C.
9902 Braddock Road Fairfax, VA 22032
(703) 425-9702

There is ample parking at the facility and all family and friends are welcome.

I am sad to pass on the news that Bob Skillings passed away on June 28, surrounded by his children, in Brunswick, Maine. Bob was a remarkable man, who joined the Bank as an economist in 1947 and retired after 40 years. Throughout his career Bob radiated the belief that people can solve challenging problems and improve opportunity for future generations. He was a mentor to many young people and always available and interested in different points of view. Bob touched many people throughout his life. I don’t have details yet an a memorial service and will post them here once they are available.

U.K. friends gave us the sad news that Alexander Storrar, known as Sandy to his Kenya acquaintances, has recently passed away. I first met Sandy either in 1943 or 1944 when he was a young agricultural officer and I was a very young learner in the Kenya Department of Agriculture. He had come to spend some time with my boss, the Officer in Charge of the Soil Conservation Service. I don’t remember much about that first meeting except for a field trip in Sandy’s car, which had defective brakes and entailed a scary but safe descent down a steep escarpment road! Our paths did not cross again until after my return from college, in 1953, by which time Sandy had become well known for his outstanding work in formulating comprehensive farm plans. His achievements led to promotion to Provincial Agricultural Officer and eventually to Deputy Director of Agriculture. Upon Kenya gaining independence, the British and Kenya Governments developed a plan to buy many of the large farms in the former “White Highlands”, for resettlement by Kenyan smallholders. To ensure that this land transfer would proceed in an orderly fashion, with the land maintaining or even increasing productivity, a new department, the Settlement Department was set up. Sandy Storrar was appointed its first Director. His was a daunting task, entailing the training of staff, to carry out both area and farm planning. With the help of departmental colleagues, the task was successfully completed and he handed over his post to a Kenyan colleague. It was the time when Kenyan officers were replacing expatriate staff. Sandy retired after more than 30 years in Kenya and joined the World Bank. I don’t know too much about his work there, but am very grateful that he put in a kind word when I applied for a job to the Bank. He continued to provide guidance, and together with his lovely wife, Bunny, gave generous hospitality. Both my wife and I extend to her and her family our sincerest condolences and deepest sympathy.
-Gert Stern

I had been talking to my son about my father, Colin Maher, probably the ” Officer in Charge of the Soil Conservation Service” mentioned here, and incidentally about Sandy Storrar and Gert Stern, when I came across your “In memoriam”, written by Gert Stern for Sandy Storrar. With the sadness which comes of reading of the death of a person of whom my father always spoke with warmth and respect, as he did indeed of Gert Stern, and the regret which comes of not having known them personally, I would like to offer my condolences to Sandy’ s wife Bunny Storrar, and also to greet Gert Stern, as it were, from a distance, a person for me in a story which is not easy to piece together. I remember his long letter to my mother when my father died and how pleased she was to hear from him. Yours sincerely, Vanessa Maher

Rudolf van der Bijl, 71, an international financial markets advisor for the World Bank Group for over 40 years, died from cancer on October 19 in Washington, DC, surrounded by his loved ones.
Rudy dedicated over thirty years to the International Financial Corporation, Capital Markets Division, which he joined in 1971, and where he was involved in a wide variety of financial sector investment projects and technical assistance activities.
In 2002 Rudy joined FIRST Initiative (under FPD network in IBRD), where he worked until his retirement in 2010, advising project management team in reviewing and evaluating project proposals.
Rudy was a person of integrity, high standards and someone with a genuine desire to help the underprivileged and poorer section of the society. His colleagues will also remember him as most straightforward, honest and charming person. Rudy taught a lot to all of us, and he was like a father to many of us. He had the softest heart behind his sarcastic personality. He liked coffee, Japanese soup (although he never had one without spilling some on his tie), lots of chocolate (oftentimes helping himself to colleagues stock), extensive travelling and intensive editing.
The wake for Rudy will take place on Friday, October 22, at Joseph Gawler’s Sons Funeral home located at 5130 Wisconsin Ave. NW, Washington DC, from 6-8pm. All are welcome to come and pay their respects. A memorial to honor Rudy that will tentatively take place on November 6, 2010, with details yet to be determined.
P.S. A quote from Rudy: “Life is too short! Enjoy!”

It is with infinite sadness that I undertake the sad task of letting you know of Cristina’s passing this morning at 11.40 am at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Cris was diagnosed a month ago in Uruguay with a
spinal-cord tumor that needed to be removed soonest and she decided to come and have the extremely risky surgery there; the surgery, which took place on September 24th, was a success – we were all ecstatic that she came out of it so well. On Saturday evening she had a respiratory and cardiac arrest that
she could not overcome and she left us peacefully this morning. Ilka, her sister, was with her, as was Graciela Luna, Carmen Carbonell and myself. There will be a funeral in Uruguay later in the year where her ashes will be dispersed around a jazmin tree she loved.
With great sorrow,
Evelyn S. Castro

It is with the greatest sadness that we are writing to you today. Michael J. Walden passed away last night at 12:15am, due to cardiac arrest. He almost definitely did not suffer any pain due to the low dosage medication he was being given.
We all feel the most terrible loss. Mike’s joyful presence is deeply missed. Words are simply not adequate. But in the last few hours we spent together yesterday, there was a strong feeling of Mike’s joy and laughter in the room. We felt relieved that he seemed – for the first time in many weeks – to be comfortable and somehow peaceful. We were able to bring some of his infectious humor and stubbornly positive attitude to life. We can only believe that, seeing this, he decided he could safely leave us and move on.
These qualities of Mike will live on in our hearts. He will be with us whenever we think of him and remember.
We will be holding a celebration of life in honor of Mike on Saturday, October 16, at Bretton Woods (http://www.bwrc.org), starting at 11:00am followed by lunch. Further details will follow, so please check back on this site again in the next few days.
We will also be preparing a DVD to be shown at the celebration. Please send any video or photos we could include to Candice at candice.hwa@gmail.com.
With gratitude for your love and friendship,
Cynthia, Jim, Guy and Candice

Horst Wagner, international forestry expert for World Bank, dies at 73
Thursday, September 2, 2010
Horst Wagner, 73, an international forestry expert for the World Bank whose work took him to countries around the world, died Aug. 23 at Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore. He had gallbladder cancer.
Mr. Wagner worked for the World Bank for more than two decades until his retirement in 1997. In the field of international development, he was an early and outspoken advocate for conservation who worked to demonstrate to local governments and local citizens that sustainably managed forests provide important benefits including flood control, clean air and wild game habitat.
His projects included planting eucalyptus trees to control erosion on the slopes around La Paz, Bolivia; reforesting 2 million acres of barren hillsides across 15 provinces in China; and galvanizing a new focus on conservation among Russian foresters after the fall of the Soviet Union.
He often contributed more than forestry expertise to the communities where he worked. In Liberia, he donated money and helped raise more from friends to build a school on the outskirts of the capital city of Monrovia.
Mr. Wagner regularly turned down promotions that would have landed him behind a desk, preferring to continue work with local foresters in the field. In the course of his career, he survived two plane crashes (one in Bolivia, the other in Mexico) and bouts with typhoid, hepatitis and a mystery virus that left him with a collapsed lung. Once, he was severely injured when he was run over by a motorcycle.
Born in Bad Kreuznach in what was then West Germany, Mr. Wagner began international development work in Ghana while he was a student at the University of Freiburg.
He graduated with a forestry degree in 1967 and worked for Germany’s foreign aid program and for the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization before joining the World Bank in 1976. By the time he retired, Mr. Wagner had worked in 49 countries and on every continent except Antarctica.
Mr. Wagner had sailed for many years on the Chesapeake Bay. His favorite retreat was his farm on the Little Choptank River near Cambridge, where he enjoyed fishing, hunting and butchering and cooking game.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Maria Luise Alber Wagner of Washington
